Everything existing on this planet consists of matter and depends on a combination of four basic elements: earth, water, air and fire. Operating like a superorganism and a well regulated system, Earth restlessly aims to balance the relations between the four elements which are in constant movement and grant life to its ecosystems. In the era of the ongoing climate crisis, this system is constantly disrupted and threatened by the impact of anthropogenic activity. Soil degradation, wildfires and biodiversity loss greatly manifest this. To what extent, though, is the privileged part of the world which is held responsible for this, in the position to change their unsustainable way of living? What does it still take to realize the interdependence of the different living and non-living things, of which humans are only a part? The exhibition Restless Earth of Matthias Fritsch showcases different forms of agency acting on this planet, returning to the role of the four fundamental elements in the creation and maintenance of human and more-than-human habitats. The 15 channel video installation captures images of natural phenomena and life forms, together with landscapes of decay, destruction and loss. Restless Earth discusses the costs of approaching the planet as an object of exploitation and control, questioning the imaginary of progress and comfort.
